Lately while looking for apartments, I have seen walkability scores on some websites. These scores are super helpful when trying to decide where to live. One issue I've had is that the scores are only available at the individual apartment listing pages.
From the National Walkability Index guide:
The National Walkability Index data are available at the block group level, a unit of census geography that is smaller than a census tract and larger than a census block.12 Every block group in the United States is assigned a National Walkability Index score. The National Walkability Index is based on measures of the built environment that affect the probability of whether people walk as a mode of transportation: street intersection density, proximity to transit stops, and diversity of land uses.13 Although numerous factors influence walking, these measures were chosen for the National Walkability Index because they can be measured using variables in the Smart Location Database (SLD),14 which has nationwide data availability and consistency at the block group level. This limited set of variables also helps make the index simple and easy for a general audience to understand.15
I thought it would be great to plot these data on an interactive web map, alleviating the need to the need to go to the individual apartment listing pages to get the walkability score. Turns out, there is a great tool already available hosted by the EPA: here that does just that.
